FREEDOM AS DEPENDENCE ACCORDING TO JOSEPH RATZINGER’S THEOLOGICAL THOUGHT

The article takes up the topic of freedom in Joseph Ratzinger’s theological thought. The Bavarian theologian reasoned in his writings that the human person can only be free when he or she lives in the truth of their dependence on God and the other being. Ratzinger pointed at the three foundations of human freedom which are the truth of being created, being like the Trinity and living in the community of the Church. The first is the recognition of being created by God, brought to life by the Divine Logos which is not only Reason but also Love. The opposite of recognizing oneself as being created, and therefore dependent on the Creator is the Gnostic rejection of the Creator, the matter and the human corporeality. The second foundation is the Trinitarian existence: ‘for’, ‘from’ and ‘with’ which is revealed to us by Jesus Christ – the second person of the Trinity. The third foundation of the human freedom is living in a community and accepting the bonds and rules that guide it. This is especially true of the Church of Christ which is the place for the realisation of freedom understood as eleutheria (freedom of God’s children) and parresia (openness, sincerity). Furthermore, the theology practiced in the Church is related to freedom because its goal is the pursuit of truth and this must be free from the dictates of utility and directed towards God, the source of all freedom.References
