ROLE OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE MARIAN YOUTH SODALITIES

Abstract

The history of the Marian Sodalities begins in the 16th century during a period of ideological changes and reforms when a hope for the spiritual renewal of Europe was arising. The inspiration for this movement was the Society of Jesus founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola. The first Marian sodality was established in 1563 in Rome and quickly spread to other continents. In Poland the sodalities gained popularity upon the arrival of the Jesuits in 1571. The first one was established in Braniewo and subsequently more congregations were formed in various cities. Despite the periodical difficulties, such as the dissolution of the Jesuit order or the repressionsby the Polish People’s Republic, the sodalities endured and experienced a revival, especially during the period of the “Solidarity” movement. Today the Marian sodalities have transformed into Christian life communities and continue their apostolic work. Their history is a sign of commitment to both the Church and the society which serves as a beautiful example of young people educating the youth.
