Siedemnastowieczne kontrowersje wokół „nowej eksperymentalnej filozofii przyrody” – wybrane filozoficzne polemiki Josepha Glanvilla

Streszczenie: Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie wybranych krytyk kierowanych przeciwko filozofii Josepha Glanvilla (1636-1680), a tym samym przeciwko formacji intelektualnej, którą reprezentował — Towarzystwu Królewskiemu Londynu na Rzecz Poszerzania Wiedzy Przyrodniczej. Ponieważ polemiści Glanvilla wywodzili się z różnych tradycji intelektualnych, ich stanowiska pozwalają uchwycić ówczesną pozycję „nowej eksperymentalnej filozofii przyrody” na tle konkurencyjnych nurtów myślowych XVII wieku. W artykule omówiono kolejno krytykę formułowaną przez konserwatywnego duchownego anglikańskiego Merica Casaubona oraz przez angielskich arystotelików, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Thomasa White’a. Analizie poddano m.in. schemat relacji teologii do nauk przyrodniczych, koncepcję rozwoju wiedzy oraz rozumienie sceptycyzmu obecne w pismach omawianych autorów. Przeprowadzone badania prowadzą do wniosku, że w przywołanych sporach przedmiotem krytyki rzadko były te elementy „nowej eksperymentalnej filozofii przyrody”, które można uznać za naukowe lub protonaukowe. Kontrowersje dotyczyły przede wszystkim jej miejsca wobec systemów klasycznych i historii filozofii naturalnej. Projekt ten oceniano jako problematyczny głównie z perspektywy teologicznej — nie ze względu na konkretne praktyki badawcze, lecz z powodu narracji i roszczeń epistemologicznych formułowanych przez członków Towarzystwa.
