Identification of the Chronology of Demographic and Economic Crises Based on Late-Medieval Warsaw Court Records

The article presents a method for identifying the chronology of demographic and economic crises in Old and New Warsaw based on the analysis of municipal court books from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. These sources provide valuable data on moments of collapse, such as sudden increases in familial property settlements following the death of a parent or protests regarding unpaid credit obligations. The crises were primarily triggered by epidemics, crop failures, and weather events, with their effects manifesting as a reduction in economic activity. Quantitative analysis of the entries allows for the detection of crisis cycles and their impact on society and the urban economy.
