Abstract

Letter from Commander Roman Rakowski, Home Army soldier, Knight of the Virtuti Militari, regarding the exhibition „Our Boys. Residents of Gdańsk Pomerania in the Army of the Third Reich”, presented at the Gdańsk Museum.

Author Biographies

Roman Rakowski

Roman Rakowski pseudonym Grab, Długi - Commander of the Polish Navy, one of the last living recipients of the Virtuti Militari Order. He was born in Brzesko in 1924. In 1940, he was sworn into the Grey Ranks in Tarnów. From 1943, he was a soldier of the Kedyw in the Kraków District of the Home Army, then in Lviv District of the Home Army. He partcipated in numerous sabotage operations and guerrilla warfare as part of the 1st Podhale Rifle Regiment, and during Operation Tempest in 26th Home Army Infantry Regiment of the Home Army. He was awarded the Silver Cross of the Virtuti Militari Order and the Cross of Valor. After the war, he briefly worked with the Freedom and Independence Association (Związek Wolności i Niezależności). From 1945 to 1947, he served at the Navy’s General Staff, from which he left at his own request. After graduating from the Jagiellonian University, he worked as a lawyer in various institutions. A resident of Gdańsk since 1958, he has been active in veterans' organizations since 1989. Founder, first president, and Honorary President of the Wrzeszcz Circle, former Vice President of the Main Board of the Association of War Disabled Persons of the Republic of Poland, former president and Honorary President of the Gdańsk District of the Association of War Disabled Persons of the Republic of Poland.
