The use of the INDXR platform in the study of the urban space of Kalisz in early modern times

Abstract

The INDXR platform is a tool for electronically processing manuscript sources. This article is a written version of a paper presented at the seminar organised in 2023 by the Commission of Historical Geography of the Polish Historical Society and the Varsavianist Research Team of the Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences. It discusses using this platform while processing the five oldest Kalisz city books from the collection of the State Archives in Poznań. It also presents the method of working with the sources and using its results in the volume of the Historical Atlas of Polish Cities dedicated to Kalisz.

Author Biographies

Wojciech Lis, Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu

Wojciech Lis (b. 1994) – MA in history, doctoral student at the Doctoral School of Humanities of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, employee of the Koszuty Manor House – Museum of the Średzka Land. He is interested in the history of towns in the Old Polish period, particularly Środa Wielkopolska. He is preparing a doctoral dissertation on the 18th-century history of Środa.

He is the principal author of this article and has compiled all parts except those indicated below.

Urszula Sowina, Instytut Archeologii i Etnologii PAN

Urszula Sowina – PhD hab., prof. of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology, Polish Academy of Sciences. She deals with the history of cities in the Middle Ages and early modernity, using municipal court registers as primary sources in city research: sociotopography, material culture, city water management, and private law. Editor and co-author of Historical Atlas of Polish Cities (Kalisz).

In this article, her contribution is the Kalisz atlas project management and numerous additions and corrections throughout the text.

Tomasz Panecki, Instytut Historii im. Tadeusza Manteuffla PAN

Tomasz Panecki – PhD, assistant professor, head of the Department of Historical Atlas at the Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences. Master’s degree in history (2012) and geography (2013), PhD in geography (2018). His research interests include the history of cartography and historical cartography and the problems of editing old historical maps. The author of a digital edition of the Gaul-Raczynski map (1807), currently working on making the Chrzanowski map (1859) available.

In this article, he prepared a database in GIS and a section of text reporting on this work.

Marek Słoń, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II

Marek Słoń – PhD hab., assistant professor at the Institute for the Historical Geography of the Church in Poland, John Paul II Catholic University in Lublin; in 2009–2020, head of the Department of Historical Atlas at the Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences, works on the history of cities and religiousness in the Middle Ages, historical geography, and digital tools.

In this article, his authorship includes the concept of an edition in the form of a database linked to the manuscript and a section of the text on research data.
