The paper examines an example of German Renaissance bookbinding from the collection of the University Library in Poznań, made by Hans Pfister or Joannes Pistor in 1584. An especially interesting detail of its decoration consists of a pressed plaque depicting the Man of Sorrows; this composition is clearly modeled after the well-known woodcut by Albrecht Dürer from the front page of The Small Passion (Passio Christi ab Alberto Durer…), published in Nuremberg in 1511. Basing on this fact, the author considers more generally the influence of prints on pictorial motifs in Renaissance bookbinding as well as the importance of Dürer for the development of the phenomenon. The paper examines an example of German Renaissance bookbinding from the collection of the University Library in Poznań, made by Hans Pfister or Joannes Pistor in 1584.
