Abstract

The issue of the Church’s stance toward the Holocaust is yet to be fully researched. The article is a voice in the discussion about the conduct of the Catholic clergy during the German occupation, with particular attention to those actions which aimed at helping the Jews. The following is a case study focusing on two priests from the Sandomierz diocese: Bishop Jan Kanty Lorek and Rev. Ignacy Życiński.

Author Biography

Agnieszka Dąbek, Polish History Museum

A graduate of archeology and theology at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Her research focuses on Polish–Jewish rela­tions, including the issue of Poles rescuing Jews during the Sec­ond World War, with a particular emphasis on the behaviors of Roman Catholic clergy. In 2019–2020, she coordinated the “Called by Name” project of the Pilecki Institute. Her professional interests include popularization of historical knowledge. She is currently employed at the Polish History Museum.
