Interview with Rudolf Haunschmied
Abstract
Rudolf A. Haunschmied is a founding member of the Gusen Memorial Committee and a self-educated regional historian of the St. Georgen an der Gusen-Mauthausen area. Most of the commemorative initiatives for the former KLGusen concentration camps of the last two decades in Austria were based on his long-standing activities and unstinting research work.
Born in 1966 in St. Georgen an der Gusen, Austria, he has been studying the history of the Gusen I, II& IIIconcentration camp complex since his early youth, while at the same time gaining an education and taking up work as a mechanical engineer. For decades, he has been campaigning for the inclusion, protection and preservation of the remnants of KLGusen within a St. Georgen-Gusen-Mauthausen memorial area. He is also an initiator and promoter of the new Mauthausen-Gusen-St. Georgen Region of Awareness that came into being towards the end of 2016.
The interview was conducted by correspondence by Bartosz Bolesławski from the Pilecki Institute towards the end of September 2018. All footnotes in the text were provided by Mr. Haunschmied.
