Abstract

Genome research is transforming our understanding of DNA sequences, not only coding but also non-coding (ncDNA). It has been shown that ncDNA sequences are not just redundant elements connecting individual genes, but have numerous functions, from regulatory to structural. They constitute elements of a complex system that determines the patterning of gene expression at various stages of cell development, differentiation, and growth. This article focuses on cis-regulatory sequences such as enhancers, silencers, LCR sequences, insulators, and UTR sequences. The current understanding of the concept of "coding and non-coding DNA sequences" has changed and will continue to evolve as genome research progresses.
