W badaniach nad dziejami epoki karolińskiej wzrasta zainteresowanie kolekcjami formuł, które wcześniej wykorzystywano głównie w studiach nad dyplomatyką, historią prawa i trwaniem późnoantycznych instytucji w średniowieczu. Formulae uznawane są obecnie za cenne źródła do badania piśmienności czy relacji społecznych, zwłaszcza codziennych stosunków między ludźmi świeckimi. Tę problematykę zgłębia Warren C. Brown, który wykorzystuje formuły m.in. do analizy relacji rodzinnych, transmisji dóbr, związków osobistych, zmian statusu osobistego oraz strategii rozwiązywania konfliktów w społeczeństwach karolińskiej Europy. Możliwości badawcze są ograniczane jednak przez niedostatek informacji na temat pochodzenia, przeznaczenia i funkcjonowania kolekcji formuł, a także niejasną skalę ich wykorzystywania przy redagowaniu dokumentów.
