Południowa Afryka od połowy XVII w. przeżywała okres daleko idących przemian, związanych z europejską aktywnością handlową i kolonialną. W kontakcie z Europejczykami dochodziło do zmian w lokalnych społeczeństwach, a jednocześnie do połowy XIX w. był to jedyny obszar w Afryce, na terenie którego możemy mówić o europejskim osadnictwie i jego ekspansji. W procesach tych niebagatelną rolę odegrały konie.
