The article presents an analysis of the results of survey research from 1988–2018 on social criteria
of Polishness. The proposed author’s division of the criteria of national identity into ethnic-national
and political-civic allows to capture the current state and changes in social consciousness
referring to the ideas of the fundamental principles on which community coexistence is based
and the attitudes appropriate to it, including the normative definition of citizen and patriot.
The polls used in the study come from the research project “Poles and others”, which was initiated
in the late 1980s by a team led by Professor Ewa Nowicka. In the theoretical dimension,
the study falls within the field of sociology of the nation and refers to the social perception of
varieties of national communities and national attachment, issues of familiarity and strangeness,
as well as the public opinion model proposed by Zbigniew Bokszański in understanding and
examining the collective national identity.
