Abstract

Background. Fixture congestion is common in soccer and reduces the time available for recovery between matches. Recovery is multidimensional, and physical, neuromuscular, biochemical, and perceptual markers may normalize at different rates.

Aim. This narrative review aimed to synthesize evidence on the effects of fixture congestion on post-match recovery kinetics in soccer players.

Material and methods. A predefined full-text literature set relevant to fixture congestion, fatigue, post-match recovery, workload, performance, and injury risk was synthesized qualitatively. Original studies formed the primary evidence base, with review articles used for context.

Results. Recovery was heterogeneous. Several neuromuscular, muscular, biochemical, and perceptual variables remained altered at 48 h, while selected performance measures recovered by 72 h. Congested schedules and high match exposure were associated with slower recovery of selected outcomes even when performance was preserved.

Conclusions. A return of physical performance does not necessarily indicate complete recovery. Fixed 48- or 72-h intervals should not be interpreted alone as evidence of full restoration. Monitoring should integrate individual match exposure, workload, performance, and perceptual responses.
