Impact of Cardiovascular Comorbidities on COPD Prognosis and Treatment Response: A Systematic Review

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is commonly associated with co-existing cardiac disease, including ischemic heart disease, heart failure, hypertension and arrhythmias. Comorbidities are associated with the same risk factors as COPD; aging, systemic inflammation and smoking. There is now growing evidence that cardiac comorbidities impact the clinical course of COPD, leading to altered mortality, numbers of exacerbations and response to therapy. This systematic review aims to evaluate the impact of cardiovascular comorbidities on COPD prognosis and therapeutic outcomes.
