The Impact of Sleep on the Risk of Sports Injuries and Athletes' Body Regeneration – A Literature Review

Introduction: Sleep is one of the basic biological processes that determine the proper functioning of the body. It is of particular relevance in sport due to its impact on the body's regeneration, training adaptation, cognitive functions and the health of athletes. For those reasons, in recent years the relationship between the quality and length of sleep and the risk
of sports injuries is given more attention.
Aim of the study: The aim of the study is to present the current state of knowledge regarding the impact of sleep on the body's regenerative processes and the risk of injury among athletes, with particular emphasis on recommendations for sleep hygiene.
Material and methods: A literature review of publications on sleep, recovery and sports injuries published mainly between 2008 and 2025.
Results: Available studies indicate that chronic sleep deprivation is associated with
a deterioration in physical and psychomotor performance, an increase in fatigue, an increase
in inflammatory processes and an increased risk of injury. At the same time, the right amount and quality of sleep promotes muscle regeneration, rebuilding energy resources and optimizing cognitive functions.
Conclusions: Sleep should be treated as an integral part of the training process and injury prevention. Monitoring sleep parameters can be an important tool to support the care of athletes.
