Background
Calcaneal fractures are serious injuries, most commonly resulting from falls from height or road traffic accidents. Clinically, they present with severe pain, swelling, and an inability to bear weight on the affected limb.
Aim
The aim of this review is to present the current literature on calcaneal fractures and their minimally invasive stabilization using the Calcanail system. The available evidence indicates that the use of this technique reduces the risk of postoperative complications associated with the ORIF (Open Reduction and Internal Fixation) technique.
Material and methods
A systematic review of scientific literature was conducted. A systematic search was carried out in PubMed, GoogleScholar using keywords. Emphasis was placed on studies, randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses.
Results
The Calcanail technique allows for earlier surgical intervention compared with ORIF, as it does not require complete resolution of soft-tissue swelling. Its minimally invasive nature reduces soft-tissue trauma and enables treatment even in patients with persistent swelling or relative contraindications, with patient selection based on individual clinical assessment and risk of complications.
Conclusions
The use of the Calcanail intramedullary system for the treatment of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures is a minimally invasive surgical technique associated with a lower risk of postoperative complications compared with ORIF (Open Reduction and Internal Fixation). The Calcanail system is characterized by a faster return to functional recovery and earlier restoration of limb mobility compared with traditional treatment methods.
