Abstract

Background: Recovery from exercise is an active, multisystem process. Chronic psychological stress from academic and occupational demands activates the same neuroendocrine, autonomic, immune and behavioural systems that mediate recovery, raising the possibility that non-training stressors impair the capacity to recover from physical effort.

Aim: To synthesise critically the medical evidence on how chronic academic and occupational stress affects post-exercise recovery, and to derive practical, mechanism-based implications for athletes, students, workers and clinicians.

Material and methods: Narrative review of experimental, observational and longitudinal human and animal studies, systematic reviews and meta-analyses addressing stress, the HPA axis, autonomic function, sleep, inflammation, overtraining and recovery.

Results: Chronic stress dysregulates the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis and the sympathoadrenal system, blunting hormonal reserve while sustaining catecholamine drive. Pre-clinical and human data show that stress prolongs exercise-induced muscle hyperalgesia and induces myostatin-dependent muscle atrophy. Stress also shortens sleep, shifts the Th1/Th2 cytokine balance, lowers heart-rate variability and raises the need for recovery — signatures that overlap with overreaching and overtraining, in which stress capacity, not training load alone, determines maladaptation. Academic stress, especially in student-athletes, coincides with reduced recovery, mental fatigue and higher injury risk. Conversely, well-dosed exercise buffers stress, yet stress reduces physical-activity engagement, producing a reciprocal relationship.

Conclusions: Chronic academic and occupational stress is a clinically meaningful, modifiable determinant of post-exercise recovery. Recovery should be monitored and managed multidimensionally — sleep, load, autonomic and psychometric markers — rather than as a purely physical phenomenon.
