Abstract

The Nobel Prize, established in 1901 has been not only a prestigious award from the very beginning, but also a factor influencing the direction of scientific development. The aim of this article is to analyse its real significance for the development of medicine and chemistry, especially in the context of shaping the main trends in research, financing and introducing discoveries into clinical practice. Based on selected examples - from the discovery of Helicobacter pylori, through iPSCs and microRNAs, to super-resolution microscopy and the CRISPR-Cas system - it is shown that the Nobel Prize can accelerate the development of specific concepts and technologies. At the same time, its impact goes beyond symbolic recognition of achievements and has long-term consequences for the development of science.
