Abstract

In recent years, research on transgenerational trauma transmission has shown that traumatic experiences can affect not only the individual but also their offspring. The article discusses biological mechanisms, such as DNA methylation and microRNA changes, that may mediate the transmission of trauma effects. Studies conducted on both humans and animals suggest that children of individuals who experienced extreme stress — such as the Holocaust or genocide — exhibit epigenetic changes that may influence their susceptibility to mental disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder. Although the results are interesting, further research is necessary to clearly distinguish environmental influences from biological factors and to understand whether these changes may have an adaptive function.
