Środowisko miejskie stanowi wyjątkowo trudne miejsce do życia dla roślin. Z jednej strony rośliny zarówno zielne jak i drzewiaste są przez mieszkańców miast pożądanym elementem zurbanizowanego krajobrazu. Świadomość licznych korzyści jakie niesie ze sobą zieleń miejska wzrasta, również ze względu na szeroką dokumentację naukową w tym zakresie. Z drugiej jednak strony, warunki wzrostu i rozwoju są na obszarach miejskich wyjątkowo trudne, co wpływa na obniżenie zdrowotności i jakości zieleni. Co więcej, w wyniku intensywnej urbanizacji i dużego zagęszczenia populacji miast mamy do czynienia z nasileniem istniejących czynników stresowych, ale też z pojawianiem się nowych. W ostatnich latach dużą uwagę poświęca się rosnącemu problemowi zanieczyszczenia światłem. Choć jest to problem globalny, wciąż jest mało poznany, a jego skutki są nielicznie udokumentowane. Poniższe opracowanie skupia się na przybliżeniu aktualnego stanu wiedzy co do wpływu tego czynnika na fenologię, morfologię i funkcjonowanie roślin drzewiastych.
