Abstract

Botanical gardens are institutions with a long history, and their function has evolved throughout history. Currently, due to the dramatic increase in the number of endangered species, their key role is the conservation of plant biodiversity. Botanical garden collections contain nearly one-third of all vascular plant species, including 41% of plants classified as endangered, although their distribution is highly uneven, with most located in temperate climate zones. However, to fully realize the potential of this gigantic living library, a number of changes are necessary, primarily in the process of locating, maintaining, and financing botanical gardens, particularly when it comes to the long-term maintenance of collections from regions with the greatest biodiversity.
