Joseph Jacques Goll: The unknown commander of the engineers of the Napoleonic fortress of Gdańsk

Joseph Goll was a French military engineer who served in the Gdańsk fortress from 1808 to 1813. He began his military service in 1795 and participated in numerous campaigns. He served under Marshals Davout, Ney, and Oudinot, demonstrating talent and courage. Between 1808 and 1810, he served as chief of engineers of the Napoleonic garrison and produced over twenty memoranda and plans regarding the fortifications of Gdańsk. These constitute a valuable source on the motivations behind Napoleon’s fortification works in Gdańsk, their progress, and the arising limitations.
