Deirdre N. McCloskey is a representative of postmodernism in the field of economics and ethics. By applying philosophical tools developed by Rorty, James, Searle and others she attempts to reinterpretate the Great Divergence as a phenomenon resulting from a major change in narration and dignity newly awarded to the bourgeois. McCloskey denies any relevance to all the factors traditionally linked with the outbreak of the Industrial Revolution arguing instead that the only relevant reasons were purely of linguistic nature. This approach is subject to many errors and misinterpretations typical of postmodernism. McCloskey’s analysis is ahistorical, inadeqaute and in many aspects purely ideological and unscientific.
