After the authorities of Gdańsk had unequivocally supported Augustus II during the interregnum following the death of John III Sobieski, the city was subjected to heavy reprisals: ships belonging to Gdańsk merchants were confiscated and profitable trade links with France were severed. Hoping to normalize relations, the city council engaged in diplomacy at numerous European courts, including Berlin, so as to help Gdańsk regain favour in Paris. In March 1698, in order to fully explicate its position and counter French accusations, the city authorities order a special document be drawn up – the “Memorandum”. In this document, the city justified its unyielding stance, shifting the entire blame to French diplomats and the French prince Louis de Conti. Though eventually the city council was forced to relent, the document itself is an example of Gdańsk’s active and firm foreign policy.
