W swoich notatkach z podróży po Francji i Włoszech (Notes of a Journey through France and Italy, 1824-26), William Hazlitt pokazał, jak na początku XIX w. na zachodzie widziana jest Italia. Chociaż wciąż podzielona jest na regiony, to jednak naturalne piękno oraz dziedzictwo artystyczne półwyspu zdają się zapowiadać jej zjednoczenie polityczne. Hazlitt charakteryzuje odwiedzone miasta oraz napotkane tu osoby, rysując osobliwy (pasjonujący i zaskakujący) obraz Italii, zanim stała się Włochami.
