Liberal Education in the Context of Higher Education

The article presents the analysis of selected modern approaches to liberal education (general education) in the context of knowledge system of academic education. The reflection of J. H. Newman on liberal education is the basis for the contemporary reflection of A. Bloom and A. MacIntyre on the condition of university, the humanities, and general education. The analysis also includes references to the reality of Polish higher education system, and it constitutes an inspiration for further reflection on the future of general education in the context of deepening utilitarian tendencies in today’s education.
