Abstract

The Eutin library celebrated its modest jubilee last year but at the same time it draws attention to the 25 years of the existence of a scientific unit dealing with the history and culture of traveling. In a tiny town in the north of Germany, the library stores the attention-grabbing collection of 18 thousand volumes of diaries, memories, original manuscripts and prints, a collection of maps and atlases (over 5,000) on various information carriers. What is also available there is Wolfgang Grieg’s constantly updated bibliography of literature and sources found in other collections, currently including 24 thousand titles.

Author Biography

Włodzimierz Zientara, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Faculty of Languages

Dr hab. Włodzimierz Zientara, prof. NCU, head of the Department of Old Literature and Culture at the Department of German Philology at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. He deals with the history of the intellectual culture of Royal Prussia, the history of the press, the history of German-language calendars, foreign travellers’ accounts about Poland in the 17th and 19th centuries. He is the author of numerous publications, including: Sarmatia Europiana oder Sarmatia Asiana? Polen in den deutschsprachigen Druckwerken des 17. Jahrhunderts (Torun 2001 and 2003); together with Jerzy Serczyk, Kurzer Abriss der deutschen Geschichte for 1945 für Germanistik-Studenten (Toruń 2006). In the recent years, he has published in the publishing house edition Lumière in Bremen.
