”IF YOU WILL GENEROUSLY WRITE A LETTER...”—THE LETTERS TO WŁADYSŁAW POBÓG-MALINOWSKI BY HIS DAUGHTER IRENA
In September 1939 W. Pobóg-Malinowski (1899–1962) together with his family left Warsaw along with the evacuating Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His daughter from his first marriage Irena (1925–1994) remained in Poland. These irregular relations started after World War II, unfortunately the political conditions after 1945 limited the contact to letters, and the meeting planned along with the exchange of letters never happened. At the beginning the tone of the correspondence was dry, but with time they gradually became more friendly and cordial. Pobóg remained in Paris, and his daughter finished her studies and began working at the Faculty of Law of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. The presented letters have been written only by one the sides. The correspondence written by the daughter was nowhere to be found. The published materials are a very interesting example of multithreaded or even multi-layered relations between people whom on one hand were working and developing their careers, and on the other hand were just ordinary people missing their home.
