In my paper I review the Modern Cretan terminology denoting pig (Sus domestica L.), discussing the distribution, origin and etymology of 29 Cretan animal names. My short survey of the Modern Cretan nomenclature for ‘pig’ confirms what was already known: the terms inherited from Ancient Greek are limited in number, e.g. 2.3. k£proj, 4. mounoÚcoj, 9.1. co…ra, 9.2. co…roj. The Modern Greek dialects often renew and expand the vocabulary, using descriptive and onomatopoeic designations (cf. 3. loÚta, 5.1. oÚtsi oÚtsi, 6.1. plat…na, 7.1. skolinÒj) and borrowings from outside (e.g. 8.1. skrÒfa). As the rural sophistication in breeding domestic animals increases, the Cretans feel the need to distinguish male and female (e.g. 7.1. skolinÒjvs. 7.2. skolian»; 9.2. co…roj vs. 9.1. co…ra), as well as their growing up offspring (cf. 1.2. gouroun£ki, 1.4. mwrogoÚrouno, 2.1. kapr£ki, 8.5. skrof…di). They want to denote the old-aged animals by special names (see 2.4. gerok£proj, 8.8. grÒskrofa,8.9. ntaounÒskrofa), as well as the gelded (cf. 4. mounoÚcoj) or the big ones (e.g. 8.6. skrofoÚra, 8.7. skrÒfouroj, 9.3. k outroubarÒcoiroj).
