publishing activity of students
pl_PL
As a result of the law about censorship of 31 July 1981, the conditions of publishing texts in print somewhat changed. Internal prints of an organization were among texts which no longer underwent the preliminary control. Owing to this, numerous student magazines, published as internal prints of the university, sprung us like mushrooms in the Catholic University of Lublin in a small circulation. At least eleven of them were published by the student government or its sub-departments. The group included both magazines which appeared only once or a few times ( e.g. “Spojrzenia”, “Brzytwa”) and the ones which went beyond the university entourage (e.g. “BIS”).

pl_PL
JBiblioteka is an innovative template programme (based on open source CMS Joomla!) for public libraries, which puts an emphasis on the accessibility of internet pages. It allows libraries to introduce an internet portal, which meets the requirements of the WCAG 2.0. standard (Web Accessibility Guidelines) and usability of the webpage services. It is of utmost importance because of the Regulation of the Council of Ministers of 12 April 2012 aboutthe Home Frameworks of Interoperability , the minimum requirements for public registers and electronic information exchange, and the minimum requirements for data transmission systems (Dz. U. 2012, entry 526). The regulation obliges entities of public utility to harmonize the webpage services to the WCAG 2.0 standard recognized in most European countries. The article presents the results of the experts’ analysis concerning the review of the functionality of the JBiblioteka template and the analysis of its accessibility. The main aim of the text is to present new solutions in the field of adjusting internet services to the needs of handicapped people and making librarians acquainted with innovative solutions increasing the quality of the library internet services.

The article addresses the question of provenance research conducted in the collections of the University Library in Toruń. It also concerns the identification of the marginalia made by Jan Brożek (1585–1652) in two prints purchased by the University Library in 1968 – Strena by Johannes Kepler (Frankfurt 1611) and Numerus figuratus by Johann Remmelin (Nuremberg 1614).The author provides: a description of the copy, the evidence for the attribution suggested in the text (based on Brożek’s manuscripts kept in the collections of the Jagiellonian Library in Cracow); the marginalia included in Kepler’s work are connected with the treatise Problema geometricum issued by Brożek in 1615. The last part of the article presents the scientific prospects connected with the reconstruction of the scientific skills and tools of the Cracow scientist – both in a smaller dimension referring exclusively to his notes connected with the treatise of 1615, and the whole of his manuscript legacy which is yet to be thoroughly examined.

Katalogi rejestrują w sumie 15 174 woluminy, jednak tytułów zgromadził pastor znacznie więcej, gdyż niektóre tomy zawierały czasami nawet po kilkaset drobnych druków, dokumentujących ówczesne życie religijne, społeczne i polityczne. Tak pokaźny zbiór drobnych objętościowo publikacji wyróżniał księgozbiór Gereta spośród innych znanych nam z zawartości dużych bibliotek prywatnych XVIII stulecia.

The multidimensional activity of Toruń’s town councillor and royal postmaster Jakub Kazimierz Rubinkowski mainly concerned the running of an information agency dealing with editing and distributing manuscripts . An important aspect of his cultural activity became his role as an agent in book-binding services and the purchase of books for the wife of the Grand Crown Hetman and Castellan of Cracow – Elżbieta Sieniawska. Rubinkowski, a noblewoman, a Baroque erudite and a bibliophile – he was an ideal candidate to carry out such tasks. His work was facilitated by the fact that Toruń enjoyed a strong position on the Polish bookselling market, which guaranteed the possibility to purchase both Polish and foreign books which were in demand. The bookseller’s search query included the works of Sieniawska’s father – Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski), other Polish authors (also from the territory of Royal Prussia) along with the classics of the early modern European literature. Equally important was the fact that Rubinkowski had a direct contact with Toruń’s guild of book-binding masters, which helped Sieniawska to preserve and renovate the books, which mostly came from her library in Puławy. Rubinkowski, particularly in the years 1725–1726, informed about the upcoming auctions of books organised in Toruń, received books sent in ships from Puławy and organised the transport of the purchased and renovated volumes. Within two years he participated in the purchase of a few hundreds of books, which made him one of the leading book-selling agents of the time of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The article includes a thematic analysis of the 16th-18th century prints of Elbląg which are now part of the collection of the Copernicus Library. It also discusses the origin of the prints and the sources of their origin. The subject matter of the old prints is quite complex and includes scientific works, belles-lettres, religious literature and legal-political texts. Among the authors of the texts there are many teachers from the Elbląg Gymnasium School. The article presents most of the authors of the discussed prints. The origin of the old prints of Elbląg was established on the basis of the experience of the author of the article. The prints analysed here come from both institutional libraries and private sources. Almost each of them includes a bookplate of the owner, or any other ownership mark such as a handwritten entry. The collection comprises 77 prints published in Elblag’s publishing houses.

pl_PL
In 2013 the Copernicus Library celebrates its 90th anniversary. Thus, the editorial team of the journal “Folia Toruniensia” has decided to devote a whole volume to the Library. The special edition of the journal allows the reader to get acquainted with valuable collections kept in the Library. The authors of the texts have described an unknown book from King Sigismund Augustus’ library, books from the book collection of the Reverend Krzysztof Henryk Andrzej Geret, numerous prints from Elbląg, antique books from the old library in Stargard Szczeciński, German officers’ annals and theatre posters from Grudziądz. The texts provide insight into the richness and variety of the Library’s collections and present to us an interesting process of book collecting. The Copernicus Library, the oldest scientific library in Pomerania, which stores the most precious historical collections, is at the same time a modern library, which is demonstrated in the article concerning the Library’s contribution to the creation of a national bibliography – a huge database constituting a basic source of information about the Polish publishing market.

The article includes a formal analysis of Elbląg prints from the 16th- 18th centuries, which are now part of the collection of the Copernicus Library in Toruń. It discusses in detail Elbląg’s printing industry of the period and introduces the owners of printing houses. The articles also addresses the languages in which the texts were printed and their chronological scope. The first printer in Elbląg was Wolfgang Dietmar, who worked in Elbląg for a short time – merely 6 years (1558-1564). Elbląg’s printing industry flourished at the beginning of the 17th century, when Wendelin I Bodenhausen arrived in Elbląg when the city was in its prime. The printing house belonged to the Bodenhausen family for over 40 years. Next, the printing house became the property of the Korell family. After Achacy II Korell died without an heir, the printing house was sold to the Preuss family of merchants who were related to the Korells and remained their property for over 50 years. Other significant printers from Elbląg were Johann Gottlieb Nohrmann and Friedrich Traugott Hartmann. In the period under discussion, books in Elbląg were printed in three languages: Polish, German and Latin. The majority of prints analyzed in the article were published in Latin. It has been established that until 1772 Elbląg’s printing houses issued 1679 prints, merely 77 of which are included in the collections of the Copernicus Library.

Krzysztof Henryk Geret
book collecting
pl_PL
The historical collection of the Copernicus Provincial Library constitutes a perfect source of research on various aspects of the history of the book, including book collecting, in the Toruń of yesteryear. One example may be the private library of Krzysztof Henryk Geret (1686-1757), who arrived in Toruń in 1713 and in 1723 became a senior clergyman of the Protestant Church there. Geret was a theologian-erudite and the owner of a library which was considered to be the biggest private book collection in Toruń in the Old Polish period. The collection was dispersed as a result of three auctions conducted in the years 1764, 1765 and 1768. The books from the collection, recognizable thanks to bookplates or the owner’s signature, can be found in many Polish and foreign libraries. Yet, most of the books – 514 titles included in 163 volumes - belong to the collections of the Copernicus Library. It is a minor fragment of his collection, which cannot constitute a basis for the description of the content of Geret’s library. Nevertheless, it provides an insight into such elements of his book collecting activity as how he went about collecting his books, his attitude to his books, his reading habits and the fate of his collection after his death.

Prussian military
German officers’ annals
pl_PL
From the very beginning of the existence of Prussia, the army was highly respected by citizens, and the rulers made a persistent effort to increase the army’s effectiveness. One of the characteristic features of the Prussian military conduct was the fact that each year a list of officers from all military units was issued; it included information about the army’s structure or dislocation. Next to each officer’s name there appeared not only information about his current rank or posting, but also about the date of his commission or the military decorations he possessed. The article presents the specific nature and history of the Prussian officers’ annals and examines the content and formal features of the volumes owned by the Copernicus Library. Emphasis is given to revealing their source, value for historians. It also includes a description of how the officers’ annals became part of the collections of the library.

The Bibliography of the Content of Periodicals
pl_PL
Since 1 January 2006 the Copernicus Provincial Public Library in Toruń has participated in the creation of an electronic bibliographic database (“Articles from Polish dailies and weeklies (MARC21, 2005-)”. This constitutes part of the present Polish national bibliography, as it has emerged from the Bibliography of the Content of Periodicals. The database is available free of charge at: http://mak.bn.org.pl/cgi-bin/makwww.exe?BM=26. The Common Press Database in the Copernicus Library in Toruń is being created by the employees of the Information-Bibliography Department. At present we are preparing two periodicals in the MAK system: “Tygodnik Solidarność” and “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna”. Since 2006 we have introduced 33,998 bibliographic records to the bibliography of articles from dailies and weeklies. This constitutes 1/6 of the content of the whole database created by 14 libraries. The only library which has introduced more entries is the National Library. The database contains 209,404 documents and has been visited by 599,408 users, which means that over 1/3 of the users checking the Bibliography of the Content of Periodicals use the Common Press Database despite the fact that it records only 25 periodicals. All this proves how much interest our database attracts and that it requires further development.

The highest number of typical library medieval manuscripts may be found in the collections of the University Library in Toruń. All the manuscripts were brought there after the end of WW II, mostly in the years 1945-1947, and were placed among the so-called “protected collections”. Currently the collection consists of 770 inventory units and 6 linear metres of uncatalogued material. Today’s collection of 71 medieval manuscripts of NCU library constitute mainly old collections of the State and University Library in Königsberg. They comprise religious works, legal works, and historical, medical and astronomical texts.Another library which stores medieval manuscripts is Copernicus Voivodeship Public Library in Toruń. Its collections consists of 19 manuscripts (e.g. calendars, prayer books, the lives of the saints) from the period until 1500, written in Latin, German and Greek.A considerable number of medieval official books generated in the office files of the Old and the New Towns of Toruń are kept in the State Archive in Toruń. The collection includes also manuscripts similar to those found in the library.

pl_PL
The examination of the book collection donated by John Clare to the chapter library brings surprising results. The bishop gave to the chapter 17 volumes: 7 books concerning canon law and 7 works concerning theology. Among the canonistic works we can find the most important medieval collections of church law: The Decretum Gratiani and The decretals of Gregory IX, the commentary on the Decretals of Gregory IX by Heinrich von Merseburg, and the outline of church law concerning the election for church positions by William de Mandagoto. Among the theological works we can distinguish two most important medieval syntheses: Sentences by Peter Lombard and Secunda secundae – the most widely-read part of the Summa by Thomas Aquinas and his two volumes of the Catena, translated into German a few decades later on the initiative of the order. The mysterious “illuminated code” may be regarded as the first version of Speculum humanae salvationis, the anonymous work showing the history of salvation in miniatures, which was copied on the walls of the organ gallery in the cathedral in Königsberg. The codes donated to the chapter are the evidence that the benefactor was a man of great intellect, who cared for the legal and theological education of the cathedral clergy. They also reflect the processes of forming new church administration in the bishopric of Sambia, whose protagonist in the years 1294-1344 was John Clare from Toruń – a member of the cathedral chapter and bishop. The book collection might have inspired the development of art and writing in German in the Teutonic Order.

Johann Gotfryd Rösner

pl_PL
Torun’s mayor Johann Gottfried Rösner, who died in 1724, bequeathed a considerable book collection. However, the source base does not allow us to get fully acquainted with his reading interests. The book collection and other properties of the mayor were put up for auction in Toruń on 1 October 1725 owing to the decision of the town council. The auction catalogue to the book collection did not survive. It turns out that not all books were sold. In February 1728 some part of Rösner’s book collection was put up for auction in Wittenberg. The auction catalogue has survived, and not all the books included in it were the property of Rösner. The list of Rösner’s belongings includes 41 books in the folio format, and a dozen of volumes kept now in the collections of various libraries, mostly Copernicus Voivodeship Public Library in Toruń and the Library of Nicolaus Copernicus University. The above-mentioned sources let us conclude that Toruń’s mayor created an interesting book collection. Being a great book lover, he also exhibited a utilitarian attitude towards books.

pl_PL
Eugeniusz Przybył (1884-1965) was one of the most important figures among Toruń’s bibliophiles in the interwar period and in the first years after the war. He arrived in Torun in 1920. As a graduate of the Academy of Arts, he was employed as a drawing instructor in Teacher Training College for Men, where he worked until he retired in 1930. After the war he worked in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń for 6 years as an adjunct. He collected books all his life. His collection included about 10,000 books, most of which were donated to the University Library. Collecting books was his great passion, which started when he was studying in Cracow in the years 1905-1914. Among the book collected by him at the time, the most outstanding are 300 titles of fine literature. The books possess not only great literary quality, but also have aesthetic value, which resulted from the changes which had taken place in book art in the period of Young Poland thanks to Stanisław Wyspiański and other artists - members of the society of Polish Applied Art. Particularly precious are 22 publications of plays written by Wyspiański, who also designed their edition. Other titles with outstanding aesthetic value include books of Jan Kasprowicz, Lucjan Rydel, Tadeusz Miciński, Bronisława Ostrowska, graphically designed by such artists as Stanisław Dębicki, Włodzimierz Tetmajer, Antoni Procajłowicz, Stefan Filipkiewicz and Stanisław I. Witkiewicz. In Przybył’s book collection of Young Poland there are also a dozen of books published by the printing house “Książka”, which have lavish artwork. They include e.g. books with works of Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer, Stefan Żeromski, Władysław Orkan decorated and illustrated by Jan Bukowski, Karol Młodzianowski, Anna Zawadzka, Wojciech Jastrzębowski, Leon Czechowski. During his studies Przybył also collected books about art, history, local history, philosophy, religious studies, natural science and a few other fields.

Despite changes in methods of transferring information, printed publications are still an important means of spreading knowledge and have an established position among academics. They also constitute an essential element which evaluates academic achievements of academics and researchers. It is more and more frequent that bibliographical descriptions or some of their parts are employed in the process of such evaluations besides various quality meters (impact factor, Hirsch’s and Egghe’s indexes, the scoring of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education). On this basis the relations between documents are established and parameters characterizing their collections and features are defined. The article is an attempt to show this type of relationship. It presents the results of the examination of the collection of documents dedicated to the libraries in Toruń, and registered in the “Polish Bibliological Bibliography” in the years 1995-2011. The research material comprises the collection of 264 bibliographical works such as books and their versions before the final revision, periodicals, articles from the press and fragments of joint publications. The author analyses the quantity and content of the material collected, paying special attention to both the rapid growth in the number of publications, the variety of publishing forms, the thematic range of published works, and the specificity of the “Polish Bibliological Bibliography” as a source of data to bibliometrical research.

“Toruń’s book collection” is a series for the general public, which was created to commemorate the 750th anniversary of two Pomeranian towns – Toruń and Chełmno. Its publisher was the Toruń Society of Culture, which rendered great service to broaden the historical consciousness of Toruń’s inhabitants. In the years 1980-1984 twelve volumes presenting the history, tradition and culture of the region to the general public were published. Zygfryd Gardzielewski was responsible for the graphic design, and Alojzy Tujakowski was an editor. The edition of the series was finished in 1984, but there appeared a similar initiative – “Book Collection of the Toruń Society of Culture”- which continued the tradition of publishing books for the general public. The article describes the circumstances of the creation of the first publishing cycle of the Toruń Society of Culture. It lists books which were to have been published, but eventually never occurred in print.

The aim of the article is to discuss the influence of modern information technologies for the blind and visually impaired on the work of libraries, particularly in the aspect of library collections and information services. The article explains the term ‘typhlo-informatics’ and describes the most frequently used products defined by this term. Next, the author characterizes the changes which took place in the formats of documents and the manners of making them accessible to visually impaired people. The article goes on to describe the activity of the only unit in Torun which meets the needs of the blind and visually impaired – the Reading Centre for the Sick and Handicapped of Copernicus Voivodeship Public Library. The book collections were described, taking into account changing data storage devices and the offer of services directed at the above-mentioned group. The author also stresses the difficulties which appear as a result of technological changes.

“Christherre-Chronik”
pl_PL
The copy of Christherre-Chronik in the University Library of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun is one of 95 copies of the work preserved and available now in Europe. As it was settled by R. Plate, the manuscript was created at the end of the 14th century, probably outside the Teutonic Order. Apart from Christherre-Chronik the manuscript includes The Chronicle of the World by Rudolf von Ems. The manuscript was kept in Tapiau between 1468 and 1474, and in 1541 in Königsberg. Probably in Tapiau shortly before 1541 the inner sides of the cover were lined with documents from Ostroda. It seems that originally the code was kept in Malbork, and not in the castle in Ostroda as it was previously thought. Acquiring Christherre-Chronik by the Teutonic Knights may be the evidence of the reception of the knowledge of the Old Testament, which became quite common among some groups in the Teutonic Order in the face of the crisis in the Teutonic State from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries.

peregrinations
pl_PL
The main aim of the work is the analysis of the role of books and book collections during educational peregrinations in the 17th century. Books constituted an integral element of studies, both at home and abroad. Textbooks of history, rhetoric, philosophy, mathematics and military architecture played an essential role in the process of academic education. Polish students of the time travelling to get knowledge and skills became authors of printed dissertations, which crowned their academic studies. The book, which in Baroque constituted a valuable and in many cases main source of knowledge about the world, arose interest in book collections and their maintenance. Libraries were included in the itinerary of many peregrinations. Church and town libraries, public and private, were frequently visited. Their characteristic feature was a predilection for depicting all interesting exhibits. This tendency determined the length and accuracy of descriptions of library collections. The passion (typical of Baroque) to acquire knowledge about rare and unusual works of art, technical inventions, animals and things also involved visiting libraries., which very often came down to watching unusual exhibits and, in fact, became a kind of entertainment.

Wawrzyniec Działowski
Nicolaus Copernicus Public Provincial Library in Toruń
pl_PL
The Dzialowskis living in Chelmno Land until the 20th century belonged to the szlachta (nobility) and the landed gentry who attached significance to learning about, constructing and maintaining the memory about members of their family. In the first half of the 18th century the writer from the Prussian territory Wawrzyniec Dzialowski created the so-called black book of the Dzialowskis on the basis of preliminary research in the court and private archives from Royal Prussia. It is a lost manuscript including extracts from documents and diaries from the 16th to 18th centuries, concerning the family and families related to them. Wawrzyniec was motivated not only by his curiosity, but also by the desire to strengthen the prestige and the social position of his family. That is why when in 1738 in the second volume of the armorial of Kacper Niesiecki there appeared a very laconic comment about the Dzialowski family, Wawrzyniec asked Jozef Andrzej Zaluski for help, and sent a summary of the work about the Dzialowskis to the author of the armorial, who included it in the supplement to the 4th volume. It shows that since the 18th century the representatives of the family had spread the untrue legend about their origin from the medieval knight Mikolaj Dzialowski, known for supporting Poland during the Thirteen Years' War. Handwritten notes in the above-mentioned copy of the volume, kept in the collection of Copernicus Library in Torun and belonging to Wawrzyniec's descendants until the end of the 19th century, show that the Dzialowskis treasured the memory about their family. Wawrzyniec's son, Teodor, recorded births, weddings and deaths of his family's members on the endpaper of the book in the years 1763-1778, thereby creating a kind of family chronicle of the Dzialowski family residing in Mgowo and Turzno. The records, which came from the manuscript traditions of 'silva rerum', were later completed by Teodor's brother - Dionizy, Wawrzyniec's great-grandchild - Ksawery, and the unidentified person who continued writing the chronicle until the genealogical line of the family died out in 1899. In this way the unique source of information about the genealogy of the Dzialowskis family and their desire to maintain the memory about their family was created.

pl_PL
The work of Hieronim Derdowski in the editorial office of Gazeta Torunska as an editor did not only consist in preparing materials for print in the periodical. Being responsible for editing, he also bore consequences for publishing individual articles, notes and correspondence, which very often led to searches in his house and the printing shop, interrogations, accusations and press trials. Derdowski, responsible for the paper, worked in the editorial office from 1879 to 1884 with breaks, and in this period of time he was brought to court seven times. The first three trials finished with freeing him, but the next ones resulted in Derdowski's being convicted. In the subsequent four trials Derdowski was given a fine of 500 marks in total or 55 days in prison. It must have been a large amount of money as the poor editor went to prison to cover part of the fine.

The article presents the history of provenance research of old prints stored in the Library of NCU. The collections mentioned here were discussed in terms of their provenance, and literature concerning the subject was given. The reasons why there is no systematic ownership research of the whole collection were given (mainly the shortage of workers specializing in this kind of research). The article lists the main circle of readers interested in old prints from the Library of NCU, proving the necessity of continuing provenance research. Attention was paid to the new technology of working with old prints taking into account their individual features such as provenance, marginalia, covers. The article mentions a problem of creating the provenance bases on the local, national and international level in computer systems.

tourist guides

pl_PL
The article discusses the issue of the oldest tourist guides and similar editions concerning Torun and connected with the publishing market of Torun. The analysis was limited chronologically by the years 1846-1903, where the bottom border was the time of publishing the first book containing some features of a guidebook, and the top border reflects the year of publishing the first guidebook answering all the requirements of this genre in its form and content. The formal and substantive analysis was connected with the comparison of Torun's publications with the model tourist guide, which resulted in showing the evolution of Torun's Baedeker guides. The author proved that the prints of Julius Wernicke, Wegweiser durch Thorn und seine Umgebungen. […] of 1846 and Theodor Körner, Der Führer durch Thorn enthaltend eine historisch-politische Uebersicht [...] of 1847 - hitherto considered Torun's first tourist guides - did not meet all the requirements to be classified as guides. The work of Reinhard Uebrick, Thorn. Illustrierter Fűhrer [...] of 1903 may be called the first monographic guide of Torun. It must be said that less comprehensive information for travelers was included before - in the second half of the 19th century - in guides concerning bigger geographic areas, published by printing houses of John Murray, Theobald Grieben, Joseph Meyers and Karl Baedeker. They also contributed to the formation of this genre in relation to Torun.

theatre poster
pl_PL
Theatre posters constitute part of the theatre's activity. Originally they play a purely functional role informing about a cultural event, which will take place on a given day and at a given time, in a given venue. With time, however, they become witnesses of the past, showing the history of their creator, his or her profile of activity, and changes taking place in the structure of the creator's performance. Theatre posters date back to antiquity. They were created by Egyptians, Romans and Greeks. The oldest early modern poster appeared in London in 1429, and it is now kept in the London theatre museum. The history of Polish posters dates back to the 16th or the 17th centuries (researchers cannot agree on the exact century) and is linked with either the Jesuit College or the royal theatre. Torun's posters analyzed in the text come from the years 1922-1975 and are stored in the collection of Copernicus Library and the State Archive in Torun. They were created by the theatre in Torun. Today it is Wilam Horzyca Theatre, and its name, the scope of activity, the organizational structure, the profile and character of its activity have changed over the years many times. The posters were discussed chronologically and divided into groups. The authors paid special attention to the content, its structure and the manner it was presented, the format of the posters, their colours, ornaments and iconography. Each group was discussed in detail and illustrated. The theatre in Torun is not the only creator of theatre posters in the town. A similar analysis can be conducted in relation to the puppet theatre company Baj Pomorski, which is the issue to be discussed in another article.

A daily Cwiercpetit comes from the period of the ownership transformation of the Torun printing house, which took place at the beginning of the 1950s. The circulation was about 300 copies, and the fact that there is no price given in the paper makes us think that the publication was probably distributed free of charge among the staff of the plant. The publication appeared in May to celebrate the workers' world and it evinces a noticeable political context, which is the evidence of the cult of Bierut and the socialist propaganda in the first years of People's Republic of Poland.

The subject of the office and “archive” of the Library in the years 1923-1939 has never been discussed before in any literature. Thus, the work is based almost exclusively on the sources which were not sufficient to present the issue thoroughly. However, through the analysis of the source material it was possible to reveal the relation between the office of the Municipality of Toruń (later the City Board) and the office in the Library, at least in the first years of its activity. The probability that the Library copied the regulations of the municipal office is confirmed in the Library’s acts from that period, where one can find traces of applying the regulations of 1931 and 1934.The research shows that the office of the Library in the first period of its activity did not have a complicated structure as only one person dealt with office work. By the outbreak of the war the modern non-register system had been introduced in the office and the lists of acts started to be used to help. The circulation of documents depended on the employed office system, the number of workers taking part in it and how complicated the inner structure in the institution was. The place where documents were stored was adapted to conditions existing in the institution. The conclusion is the office worked well despite the lack of its own norms.

According to the analyses made by the Interdepartmental Group for Forecasting the Demand for Work existing by the Governmental Centre for Strategic Studies in Poland , by 2020 the number of people employed in the agricultural, mining, transport and fuel sectors will have dramatically fallen. The fastest- developing branches will be computer science, telecommunication, the Internet and information technologies. Thus, the profession of information broker- a specialist commissioned to look for information and make it available - will belong to the group of jobs with the so-called 'positive increasing trend'. Meeting the requirements of the changing labour market, Polish universities and colleges offer courses for those who are interested in getting new qualifications and running their own commercial information activity. The article presents the educational offer in this field for the academic year 2010/2011. Apart from the offer and general characteristics of the syllabus of courses for information brokers, the article discusses the results of the evaluation carried out among students - future information brokers - in Torun.

In 2012 the Association Solidarité France-Pologne passed its archive to the Polish Library in Paris. It is the evidence of the activity of the Association set up in 1980. Its main task was to facilitate Polish-French contacts and to help the Polish society during the martial law. After 1989 the Association was actively involved in promoting non-governmental initiatives. The collection is divided into two chronological series, which are further subdivided into sub-series embracing strictly defined fields of the Association’s activity. The collection includes documents of various types, both files and audiovisual materials. The materials were sorted out in the way that at the beginning of each series there appeared documents connected with the management of the Association, followed by correspondence, documents divided according to various fields of activity, leaflets and press. The archival documents may complement the current research on the aid offered to “Solidarity” by Western Europe and may become a contribution to new research concerning the appearance of civil society in Poland and the role of French institutions in it.

pl_PL
This article presents the edition of the hitherto unknown inventory of Chełmno’s parish church and the register of the book collection of the parish church library of the 15th century to be found in the City Book of Chełmno – the cartulary of privileges and documents established by the notary Konrad Bitschin in 1431. The source shows the library of Chełmno’s parish church as the centre of culture in the Chełmno of the 15th century. It allows us to compare the three preserved registers of book collections of medieval Chełmno: the collection of the Franciscan monastery of the 13th century, the collection of the parish church library and the register of the library of the Brethren of the Common Life of the end of the 15th century. They come from different periods of time and reflect the changes in spiritual life, theology and research interests of the contemporary intellectuals of Chełmno. While the book collections of the Franciscans and the parish church reflect the spirit of the medieval Scholasticism or nominalism, the publications of the Brethren of the Common Life harbinger the Renaissance The titles provided by the city’s notary allow us to identify and spot fundamental works of medieval theology, liturgy, history and philosophy.

bibliography – censorship in the 19th century
bibliography – history of the 19th century
pl_PL
During the period of the partitions of Poland, bibliographic studies, like all writings, were censored with the aim of preventing the distribution of any patriotic and pro-independence texts. Censorship referred to individual words, sentences and texts. Among the publishers who had trouble with censorship officials were Franciszek Siarczyński, the publisher of the fourth volume of Wiadomości historyczno-krytyczne by Józef Maksymilian Ossoliński; Michał Wiszniewski, the author of Historia Literatury Polskiej; Adam Benedykt Jocher, the author of Obraz bibliograficzno-historyczny literatury i nauk w Polsce. Joachim Lelewel, who for a short time worked as a censor, fell victim of censorship himself – the second volume of his book Bibliograficznych ksiąg dwoje was close to be prohibited from print. Bibliografia wydawnictw ludowych, published in Lviv, received a negative opinion and was classified as a prohibited book by the tsar’s censorship. The authors of bibliographic works were familiar with the proceedings of censorship, which is why they tried to avoid phrases and terms which were currently prohibited. They also employed a variety of tricks to get round the bans and cheat censors.

pl_PL
In 2004 the University Library in Torun received a small collection of archival materials including the private archive of the Szwojnicki family, who had owned the landed estate of Borkłojnie in Lithuania of Kaunas until WWII. The materials collected by the generations of the Szwojnicki family allow us to outline the history of the family. They were a family of landed officials. In the 19th century their estate of Borkłojnie was where Polish military units found shelter and food during the January Uprising. In 1897 Zygmunt Szwojnicki started to administer the estate, which he continued until the end of WWII. In the interwar period he was actively involved in the struggle for the maintenance of the Polish identity by Poles residing in the Republic of Lithuania. In 1946 he was resettled to Poland. The whole archive of the Szwojnicki family preserved in the University Library in Torun constitutes one of the minor archival collections of the library. It includes 12 inventory units. The oldest document in the collection comes from 1531, while the most recent one from 1946, which means the archival documents had been collected throughout almost 400 years. They record the history of the Szwojnicki family and their estate of Borkłojnie. The collection is a typical example of family files of the moderately well off Polish noblemen residing in Lithuania. The collection includes mainly documents confirming the family’s rights to bear the noble title and to own the landed estate, birth certificates, last wills, financial documents, biographic materials concerning the last owner of Borkłojnie – Zygmunt Szwojnicki.

The article discusses catechisms for children and youth published in Poland in the years 1945-1949. The bibliography includes 58 catechisms. What is a characteristic feature of the genre is its visible standardization, adaptations and shortened versions. Catechisms were written by priests. Most of them were published in 1949. The most significant publishers were diocesan curias in Katowice, Kielce, Olsztyn, monastic and secular publishing houses. The presented material was examined on the basis of the copies preserved in the National Library. The collection was divided into the following sub-sections: 1. Catechisms preparing to the first confession and communion, 2. General/shortened catechisms, 3. Catechisms for the youth.

The communication presents the Cracow printing of the work by Bernard of Clairvaux The manner to live a wise and good life, which was published in the publishing house of the widow and successors of Franciszek Cezary in 1652. The copy discussed here was found during inventory works in the Archdiocesan Archive in Gniezno. It turns out that Polish bibliographies and printed catalogues fail to include this publication. The edition was dedicated to the abbess of the convent in Zwierzyniec – Eufrozyna Korycińska by Michał Melecius. It consists of pages from the earlier publication of the work in 1630.

The text discusses and reviews the work by Judyta Zamrzycka titled Introligatorzy toruńscy od XV do XVI/XVII wieku – typologia cech warsztatowych, which was published in 2014. The construction of the work is quite interesting. One-third of the content of the book constitutes the documentation base, which is the result of the query. The remaining two-thirds of the publication include the theoretical part and the overview of the findings. Judyta Zamrzycka examined incunables and prints from the collections of the Copernicus Regional Public and Municipal Library in Toruń (altogether 148 volumes) and manuscripts from the State Archive in Toruń (in total 8 volumes). The book by Judyta Zamrzycka deserves to be praised owing to the comparative method of the analysis of the covers of manuscripts and incunables and the research on bookbinding workshops in the Polish territories.

Biblioteka Księgarza is the publishing series administered by the Association of Polish Booksellers, but published by various publishing houses such as Wiedza Powszechna and Państwowe Wydawnictwa Szkolnictwa Zawodowego. The series came out in the years 1960–1965 and included nine units useful in the education of future booksellers. The publications have a simple graphic layout. The series have been almost entirely forgotten, but the nine publications are now the source of information about how bookshops operated during the times of the Polish People’s Republic. The information, which may be used in discussions about various aspects connected with the sale of books in the communist times, concern the organizational composition of the Headquarters of Booksellers “Dom Książki”, the organization of mail order sales, and the calculation of the margin for distributors.

Gottfried Lengnich, a historian and lawyer who lived in Gdańsk in the 18th century left behind a collection of over 4,000 books. The collection was sold during two auctions in July and November 1774. Auction registers found in the State Library in Berlin – the Foundation of the Prussian Cultural Heritage – are available on-line. Owing to Lengnich’s academic interests, the collection includes 600 Polonicas, the majority of which are works concerning history, law and politics. The analysis of this fragment of Lengnich’s collection shows that it includes the majority of the most significant Polish and foreign authors writing about the history and law of Poland and Prussia.

pl_PL
The article addresses various issues connected with the manuscript of the epigram De monarchiis by Philip Melanchton and donated in 1607 by Michael Falck (1575–1624) to the gymnasium school library in Torun. The comparative research of the manuscript has proved that it is the original work by Melanchton. The author of the epigram made a substantial number of copies of the poem in the years 1556–1558, which he later gave to his family and friends. They differed in the number of verses: some of them included eight elegiac couplets, while others only seven. The differences between them were not limited only to the number of verses, but they also included varieties of the text in some passages. They were taken into account in the criticism of the edited text, which also included various editions of the epigram. The second part of the article discusses briefly the content of the epigram and its interpretation in the context of the political situation of the epoch when Melanchton lived. The author enclosed the isometric translations of the epigram prepared by Piotr Osiński, the PhD student at the Philological Faculty of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.

pl_PL
The research on the book includes all the aspects of its life – manufacture, distribution and use. From the 16th century the typographic resources of printing houses became standardized. Thus, the author suggested that the analysis should apply to only one kind of publication and focus on its cover, typographic layout, illustrations, publishing framework. This subject matter is rarely addressed by authors as a separate problem. This article is a minor contribution to the history of editing of a strictly defined form of a book. It discusses the typographic and editing layout of school course books published by the bookshop of Kazimierz Stanisław Jakubowski. It was set up in Lviv at the end of the 19th century. The job of a printer and a publisher was often performed by one person. Course books printed and published by Jakubowski were highly valued by contemporary users. The article presents the findings of the analysis of 61 course books. The research confirms that printing houses of the time had rich typographic resources. The publications included various fonts of print, invariably adjusted to the age and abilities of the student. Various styles were applied in the edition of prosaic and poetic texts. Elements of the page were carefully planned. Wide margins, interline spacing and the so called empty lines left much space free of print, which facilitated reading. Another good point of the publications was the transparent division of the text into smaller units and precise distribution of headlines. Among elements of the publishing framework there are various appendices. Books were adorned with numerous illustrations, mostly black and white. The above-mentioned factors and the fact that this reliable editor cooperated with outstanding authors contributed to the fact that books published by Jakubowski were highly valued.

The Polish-Italian contacts have a long history. From the very Middle Ages, when Polish scholars started to study in Italian universities, they centered around science and education. In the subsequent ages the mutual contacts also included the artistic field, when Polish artists used to go to Italy to master their skills with the best teachers. From the end of the 18th century to the mid-20th century the cooperation also included the military, social-political and economic aspects. In Italy Poles took part in the struggle for independence leading to the Union of Italy ( the Risorgimiento period), and later in the fights during both world wars. Since the mid-20th century Italy and Poland have maintained bilateral contacts in various fields. In all those periods the Polish presence in Italy was recorded in written, iconographic and artistic sources. Most of them are preserved in archives and libraries in Rome – the centre of European science, culture and Christianity. It was not until the 20th century, when the first scientific Polish institutions were set up in Rome, that it became possible to register, compile and sort out Polonicas found in Rome’s libraries, archives, cultural institutions, and private collections. Written monuments indicate a number of associations both in the sacrum and profanum spheres. The common heritage of historical memory is the evidence of Poland’s belonging to the European community for a long time.

The monograph Nowe wyzwania archiwów. Komunikacja społeczna i public relations by Marlena Jabłońska published in 2016 may attract the interest of not only archivists, but also librarians. It constitutes a model to show social communication and public relations as the philosophy of management in the context of activities carried out by archives, which should improve the archives’ work and change their social reception. The solutions suggested here may be used in practice; they should be treated with flexibility and adjusted to a given archive, its resources and needs. This new outlook on the archives overlaps with the changes that have been taking place in the archives in the recent years. Technological revolution entails modifications in the archives’ work, using more and more modern management tools, which have already been successfully employed by other institutions, including libraries. The monograph was written with a vivid and emotional language, which is the evidence of the author’s involvement in the subject matter and the proposals she puts forward. The management issues, so difficult for archivists, have been presented in a clear and transparent manner. The monograph also includes a number of drawings and tables prepared by the author. They illustrate the issues addressed in the monograph and make it easier to understand the conclusions. The books was carefully prepared and published by Wydawnictwo Naukowe UMK [the Scientific Publishing House of Nicolaus Copernics University], which received a distinction in the competition organized by the Association of Higher Education Publishers in 2017.

pl_PL
The level of knowledge about foreign travels of inhabitants of the Polish-Lithuania Commonwealth has risen owing to historical sources published both in the form of critical source editions and scientific studies. One of the most interesting documents which allows us to learn about the role of the book and the development of reading culture among Early Modern travellers is the catalogue of books which Seweryn Rzewuski, a Polish politician and magnate, took with him during his journey in 1778. The article presents the politician not as one of the leaders of the Targowica Confederation, but from a slightly different angle. The archival inventory of the travel library of Rzewuski constitutes the unique source of its kind; that is why, it is worth examining only to show the variety of interests of this traveller. Presenting his political views and the conscious selection of books to read, he seems to have a complex personality standing on the border between the mentality of a Sarmatian pilgrim and an enlightened traveller.

Aim: The aim of the article is to show a very interesting episode of a bookseller and publisher from Stanisławów – Roman Jasielski and his daughter Anna, forcibly displaced after the Second World War. On the ground floor of the house Pod Złotą Palmą [English: Under the Golden Palm] in the space after the original Priebatsch bookshop in 1946, Jasielski created one of the first Polish bookshops in Wrocław. Research method: The article was written on the basis of the archival research of source documents, literature on the subject and from the on-site check of the existing building, which is currently the Lower Silesian Public Library under the name of Tadeusz Mikulski in Wrocław. Results/Conclusions: A short stay of Roman Jasielski and his daughter Anna, and at the same time his great passion and commitment for shaping Polish literature have left a significant mark among the bibliophilic communities in Lower Silesia. Their mission enabled the Pod Złotą Palmą house to continue to cultivate the bookselling and publishing tradition with a particular passion for the book. They became a very important link that united the prewar tradition of the history of the building at 58 Rynek in Wrocław with the present-day library.
